The sha1sum command

Computes the SHA-1 hash (160 bits) of a file. Stronger than MD5, though SHA-256 is preferred today.

Syntax

sha1sum [archivo...]

Most useful options

-cChecks the checksums listed in a file

Copy-ready examples

$ sha1sum /etc/passwdSHA-1 hash

You can try them in the browser terminal: it does not touch your computer.

Typical mistakes

  • SHA-1 is considered weak for signatures; use it only for basic integrity.
