FAQ
Do I need to have taken the Basic course?
You should be able to move around folders, create files and use pipes. If that sounds familiar, this is your level; if not, start with the free Basic course.
What exactly will I learn?
Advanced permissions and ACLs, search with find and grep, text processing with awk and sed, process and signal management, services with systemctl and journalctl, disks and mounts, users and groups with expiry, networking and DNS, SSH with keys, firewall with ufw, packages, compressed backups, scripts with conditionals and loops, and system diagnostics.
Do I still need to install anything?
No. The terminal is embedded in the page and everything runs in a simulated system inside your browser. Nothing touches your computer.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in your browser (localStorage). Leave and come back without losing anything.
About the simulation
- The terminal is a teaching simulator: an in-memory virtual filesystem. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
- Disks, services, firewalls and remote hosts are simulated so you can practice safely. On a real system the commands behave the same, but on real hardware.
- It covers intermediate administration practice (LPIC-1 105.x-108.x) and does not replace the official certification nor working on a real system, which we recommend complementing.
