The difference from recompressing images inside the PDF

There are two different ways to "compress a PDF", and it's worth telling them apart:

  • Optimizing structure and metadata (what this tool does): reduces size without touching the quality of anything visible. Text and images look exactly the same.
  • Recompressing the internal images with more loss (lower JPEG quality, for example): reduces size further, but at the cost of the photos inside the PDF looking worse.
