How to Rotate PDF Pages for Free (Fixing Sideways Scanned Documents)

Guide to rotating PDF pages 90, 180 or 270 degrees, free and without uploading the file to any server. Ideal for documents scanned sideways or upside down.

You scan a contract with your phone, turn it into a PDF, and one out of every three pages comes out rotated 90 degrees. It's the most common problem when digitizing paper: the scanner or app of the moment doesn't detect orientation correctly, and the result is a document that's awkward to read and looks unprofessional if you send it to someone.

Why this happens

When you scan in landscape with your phone, or feed an automatic document feeder with mixed sheets (some portrait, some rotated), the resulting PDF inherits that orientation page by page. The scanner itself doesn't "know" which way is really up in the document, it just captures what it sees.

The fix isn't rescanning: it's rotating the pages of the already-generated PDF, without touching the original paper.

How to rotate PDF pages

  1. Upload the PDF. A preview of each page is shown.
  2. Select the pages that are misoriented (no need to rotate the whole document if only half is affected).
  3. Choose the angle: 90°, 180° or 270°, in the correct direction.
  4. Download the corrected PDF.

You can do it free with the PDF rotator on this site, which rotates pages directly in your browser, no watermark and no page limit.

Why doing this in the browser matters

A scanned document is usually exactly the type of file you don't want to upload to an unknown server: contracts, payslips, ID cards, medical reports. When rotation happens 100% in your browser, the PDF never travels over the internet or ends up stored anywhere outside your device. Only you see it, before and after.

Per-page rotation vs. global rotation

Not every tool lets you choose page by page, and that's a real limitation: if a 20-page document has 3 pages rotated wrong, forcing rotation on all 20 just moves the problem elsewhere. What's actually useful is being able to:

  • Rotate only the affected pages, leaving the rest untouched.
  • Apply different angles if the document was scanned inconsistently (some pages at 90°, others at 270°).
  • See a preview before downloading, instead of having to open the final PDF and check blindly.

What to do if the entire document is upside down

If you scanned the whole document with the sheet face down, the rotation is the same for every page (180°). Select all of them and apply the rotation at once, no need to repeat the operation page by page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose quality when rotating a PDF? No. Rotating only changes the page's display orientation, it doesn't recompress the content. Text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.

Is my document uploaded to any server? No, if you use a tool that processes in the browser. The whole rotation happens on your device.

Can I rotate only some pages and leave others as they are? Yes, that's recommended when the document has pages mixed with different orientations.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs? Not directly: you'll need to unlock the PDF first, since an encrypted file can't be modified until you enter the password.
