How to measure BPM well
- Tap along with the snare, kick or lead vocal, not at half or double: if the result looks odd, check the ×2 and ÷2 suggestions.
- With 8 or more steady pulses the calculation is reliable; the tool warns when the spread between taps is too high.
- Tap method has human bias: ±3 BPM of error is normal. For an exact figure, use a spectrum tool on a clip with a clear hit.

Frequently asked questions
What are a song's BPM?
Beats Per Minute: the number of tempo pulses per minute. It is the standard unit of musical tempo: 60 BPM is one pulse per second, 120 BPM two. DJs, producers, musicians and athletes use it to stay in sync.
Why is my result half or double what I expected?
It is the classic tap-method doubt: depending on what you are tapping (the kick or a subdivision) you may land on double or half. Check the ×2 and ÷2 suggestions against the tempo reference table.
Is tapping better than an automatic detector?
It depends on the material. With four-on-the-floor electronic music an automatic detector usually nails it; with jazz, classical, symphonies or live recordings the human ear wins. With 8-12 steady taps the tap gives a solid result.
