Simulated Linux terminal (bash)

Learn the Linux console without fear: real bash on a virtual filesystem, pipes, permissions, SSH connections to remote machines and 5 guided lessons with automatic checking.

bash practice terminal — everything is simulated, nothing touches your PC.

Tabs share the disk; ssh guest@class-server opens a remote machine.

What this terminal is and where it ends
  • It is a teaching simulator: there is an in-memory virtual filesystem. Nothing you type touches your computer, your network or any real data.
  • Local tabs share the same virtual disk. SSH opens a tab with the simulated remote machine: its disk is independent and exit closes the connection.
  • Network commands (ifconfig, ping, traceroute, ss, curl, wget, scp) show sample values so you learn to read them; nothing leaves your browser.
  • Lesson progress and history are stored only in your browser (localStorage).
  • Mind the real-world difference: on a real Linux rm -r deletes for real and there is no recycle bin. Here, permissions, users and sudo are simulated so you can practice safely.

Want to actually learn to use it?

The basic Linux course takes you from zero to fluency with 24 self-grading lessons, and the command manual answers any doubt.

The Linux console is the key to servers, development and half of computing — and the most intimidating to practice: on a real system a misplaced rm -r has no recycle bin. This simulated terminal removes the risk while keeping the learning: there is an in-memory virtual filesystem (your /home/alumno with Documentos and .bashrc, /etc, /var/log...) where real bash works —ls -la with permissions and sizes, absolute and relative paths, touch, mkdir -p, rm -r, cp, mv, cat, the | pipe chaining commands (ls | grep, cat file | head -n), grep with -i -v -n, head, tail, wc, sort, uniq, chmod with octal modes visible in ls -l, export and $variables, history and man—. And real connections: ssh guest@class-server opens a new tab with the simulated remote machine (its own disk, its readme, its /var/log/auth.log) and exit returns you to your machine; ping, traceroute, ifconfig and ss show a sample network to learn to read; wget downloads a simulated file and apt install fake-installs packages. The 5 guided lessons self-assess step by step, with a hint when you get stuck. Built for students, for teachers projecting it in class (large font and fullscreen), and for anyone who wants to master the terminal without breaking anything.

Features

  • ✓Realistic bash terminal with an in-memory virtual filesystem
  • ✓Over 60 commands: ls -la, cd, cat, touch, mkdir -p, rm -r, cp, mv, grep, find, head, tail, wc, sort, chmod, ln -s, jq, tar...
  • ✓Real pipes: ls | grep, cat file | head -n 5, and > and >> redirection with any command
  • ✓Environment variables with export, history and man pages
  • ✓SSH to a simulated remote machine: opens in a tab with its own disk, exit closes the connection
  • ✓Simulated networking: ifconfig, ip addr, ping -c 2, traceroute, ss, curl, wget, scp and apt with a package catalog
  • ✓Two-pane view to see two terminals at once and savable environments: disk, tabs and history export to a JSON file to share with the class
  • ✓5 guided lessons with self-assessment: navigation, files, permissions, network and search/filter
  • ✓Tab completion, arrow history, large font and fullscreen for projecting in class

How do I practice the Linux console?

  1. 1

Pick free terminal or a lesson

In free mode you experiment with help; lessons auto-check your steps.

  2. 2

    Navigate with LS and CD

ls lists (-a shows hidden files), cd Documentos enters and cd ~ goes home.

  3. 3

    Create, filter and set permissions

touch, echo >, mkdir -p and rm -r manage files; chmod 755 script.sh makes it executable.

  4. 4

Connect to another machine with SSH

ssh guest@class-server opens a remote tab with its own disk; exit closes the connection.

  5. 5

    Master the pipes

ls | grep Documentos, cat file | head -n 5: chain commands like on a real Linux.

Frequently asked questions

Can this terminal damage my computer?

No. It is a simulator: the filesystem lives in your browser's memory and vanishes on reload. rm -r only affects the virtual system. Nothing touches your disk, your real network or your OS.

Which commands can I practice?

Over 45: navigation (ls -la, cd, pwd), files (touch, cat, mkdir -p, rm -r, cp, mv, echo with > and >>), search and filters (grep, head, tail, wc, sort, uniq, and pipes), permissions (chmod octal), system (whoami, uname, ps, df, free, uptime), network (simulated ifconfig, ping, traceroute, ss, curl, wget, scp), packages (apt install), history, man and sudo. Type help to see them all.

How does the SSH connection work?

ssh guest@class-server opens a new tab with the simulated remote machine: it has its own disk (its readme, its /var/log/auth.log) independent from the local one, and the prompt changes to guest@class-server. exit closes the connection and returns you to your terminal.

Can I save my environment and share it with the class?

Yes: the Environments button saves the whole virtual disk, the tabs, the history and the lessons under a name in your browser. You can export it to a .json file and share it: your students import it and practice from exactly the same state, with the files you prepared. The two-pane view also lets you see two terminals at once, for example one copying and another checking with ls.

Is it good prep for a computer science test or vocational training?

Yes: the 5 lessons cover what introductory modules ask (navigation, file management, permissions, network and text filtering) and progress is stored in your browser so a teacher can check what you completed.
