Frequently asked questions
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a query protocol that provides domain registration information: registrar, creation and expiration dates, nameservers and status. It's a public database maintained by domain registries (ICANN, Nominet, etc.).
What is RDAP and how does it differ from WHOIS?
RDAP is the modern successor to WHOIS. It returns structured JSON data instead of free text, supports HTTPS and internationalized responses. This tool uses RDAP for better reliability.
Why does private or limited information appear?
Many registrars offer WHOIS privacy. With European GDPR since 2018, public information in .com, .net and other generic TLDs has also been reduced.
How do I know when a domain expires?
The expiration date appears in RDAP data. After expiring, the domain enters a grace period (~30 days) then redemption before being released to the public.
Is it legal to query any domain's WHOIS?
Yes. WHOIS is a public service by design — it's the official mechanism for identifying who is responsible for a domain. ICANN itself requires this information to be queryable.
Is it legal to query any domain's WHOIS?
Yes. WHOIS and RDAP are public services by design — ICANN itself requires registrars to provide this queryable information. It's the official mechanism for identifying the technical and administrative contact responsible for a domain. Tools like ICANN's own tool, ARIN, registrars themselves and many SEO tools make exactly the same query.
