The apt-file command

Searches which package a file belongs to, even if it is not installed.

Syntax

apt-file [update|search archivo|list paquete]

Copy-ready examples

$ apt-file search mkfsWhich package brings it?
$ apt-file list bashFiles of a package

You can try them in the browser terminal: it does not touch your computer.

Typical mistakes

  • The database is updated with apt-file update.
