However, when writing is unnecessarily prolonged through chained subordinate clauses, explanatory asides and specialised terminology that the average reader does not master, comprehension decreases considerably and the main message ends up diluted.
Formulas and limits
- Spanish: Szigriszt-Pazos with Barrio-Cantalejo's INFLESZ scale, Fernández-Huerta with the words-per-sentence correction, Gutiérrez de Polini (uses letters, not syllables) and Crawford (years of schooling).
- English: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and ARI.
- Spanish syllables follow RAE spelling rules for diphthongs and hiatuses; English uses a heuristic that gets about 90% of words right, so its scores are approximate.
- Formulas measure sentence and word length, not whether the text is well written, correct or understandable in context. Use them as a guide, not a grade.
- The text is analyzed in your browser and never sent to a server.

Readability formulas turn sentence length and word length into a score that predicts how easy a text is to read. This analyzer computes the six most used English indices, including Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and adapted Spanish formulas such as Szigriszt-Pazos with the INFLESZ scale, because applying Flesch to Spanish gives misleading results. It splits sentences without being fooled by abbreviations, highlights the sentences that are hardest to read right on your text and tells you whether the score fits the audience you are writing for.

Frequently asked questions
What is the INFLESZ scale?
It is Barrio-Cantalejo's interpretation of the Szigriszt-Pazos perspicuity index for Spanish: below 40 very difficult, 40 to 55 somewhat difficult, 55 to 65 normal, 65 to 80 fairly easy and above 80 very easy. It is widely used for health information.
Why not use Flesch for Spanish texts?
Because it was calibrated on English texts. Spanish words have more syllables on average, so Flesch scores them as harder than they are. Szigriszt-Pazos and Fernández-Huerta adjust those coefficients.
What score should a web text have?
For a general audience a Flesch score between 60 and 80 is recommended, roughly sentences of 15 to 20 words with common vocabulary. Technical texts can score lower without problem if readers are specialists.
How are syllables counted?
In English a heuristic based on vowel groups, silent e and common endings is used, correct for about 90% of words, so scores are approximate. In Spanish, spelling rules for diphthongs, hiatuses, qu and gu are applied.
Does a good score mean the text is good?
No. Formulas only measure sentence and word length. A text can score high and still be confusing or wrong. Use them to spot overly long sentences and heavy vocabulary, not as a final grade.
