Frequently asked questions
What is the average reading speed?
For silent reading of normal text, 150 to 250 words per minute for an average adult; expert readers reach 400 without losing substantial comprehension. Beyond that, comprehension collapses.
Can I use my own text?
Yes: paste any text of 20 words or more. Recommended to measure with real material from your work or studies, which usually reads slower than the literary prose of built-in tests.
Do 1000 words-per-minute speed reading tests work?
Not for real reading. Research shows that above roughly 400-500 words per minute comprehension drops drastically: anyone claiming 1000 WPM is glancing at the text, not reading it.
